Q. What is the relevant Australian Standard for electrical appliances?
Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760: 2003 is the relevant standard for the safety inspection and testing of electrical appliances.
This standard outlines procedures for the safety testing and subsequent tagging of low voltage, single and poly-phase (e.g. nominal 240V and 415V) electrical equipment where they are connected to the electrical supply by a flexible cord and/or connecting device.
This Australian Standard only governs the procedure for testing, it is not the legislation that makes testing mandatory. There are various state and Federal acts of Parliament that govern safety in the workplace and place a responsibility on employers to ensure a safe workplace - including safety from preventable accidents caused by faulty electrical cords or appliances.
